Sea glass is becoming more and more difficult to find, thanks to strict anti-littering laws and beaches where glass bottles are now banned.

The best beaches to search are difficult to access and are near old dump sites, shipwrecks, waterfront buildings such as a diner, bar or factory. Other locations that would be worthy of scrutiny, are large construction sites such as a bridge or other some other giant project.

The above picture is unaltered and shows a close-up shot of a very generous collecting spot on a deserted beach.
Low tide is really the only time to go, it allows you to access beaches which would otherwise be near impossible to access without approaching from the water. One would do well to study the tide tables and when out beachcombing to place a marker at the waterline. The marker is a visual aid which when the water reaches it, you know that it's time to head back. The best way I have found to do this is to arrive at you destination as soon as the tide has gone down enough to allow you access to the beach that you are collecting at.

I have had to pay the price for not paying close attention to the tides and as a result have had to climb up near vertical cliffs and wade around rocky points in the surf while trying to avoid stepping into a tide pool and sinking up to my waist in the water or worse, all while carrying several pounds of sea glass and other treasures.

Many wonderful treasures can be found beachcombing. I have seen sea lions, whales, dolphins, sea otters, starfish, sharks, pelicans. Upon closer inspection you will also find crabs, limpets, mussels, barnacles, sea anemone's, jelly fish, starfish, sand fleas and that's just a handful of the many living treasures to be found while out at the seashore.

The treasure that we are really after though, happens to be, sea glass, pottery and china fragments, glass bottle stoppers, driftwood, sea shells, agates, marine animal teeth, jade and more. Some of my more unusual finds have been, Naval sailors button from WW2, several glass marbles, an antique set of partial dentures and other oddities.

It is always a good idea to go with a buddy or at least tell someone where you are going and bring along enough food and water as to be able to keep your energy levels up. A sturdy backpack along with good hiking boots are advised. Taking along gloves, sun screen, first aid kit, a hat and long pants is a good idea too.
